Traveling with a person who has mobility limitations can be quite a challenge. Especially at the beach, a wheelchair, walker, or crutches can greatly limit the enjoyment of going out and sitting on the sand with family and friends.

Our family travels with someone who needs to use a walker and who has balance problems on uneven surfaces. Sand is not his friend! We went on a couple vacations where we managed to help him on and off the beach with one of those chairs with the big soft rubber tires, but it was a lot of work.

So we were ecstatic to discover that Fenwick Island, Delaware, has a free service that goes far beyond anything offered by the other beaches. Fenwick Island Beach Access Assistance will send a lifeguard in a Bobcat to pick up someone (and their beach gear) and take them to where you are set up on the beach. At the end of the day, you call them and they come back and help you into the vehicle and take you back to street parking, or your accommodations if they are in the block off the beach. The service is available daily from 10 am – 4 pm. Call 302.462.6942 or go to a lifeguard on the beach to request the service.

So if you are planning a DE/MD Beach getaway, think about staying at Fenwick Island. For us, the extra help made our beach week perfect!
