Last year, when we asked what summer plans everyone had, we found that there are few things our Women’s Daily Post ladies enjoy more than heading for the beach with a bag of books to read. We live for summer sun, sand, something cold with a cute little umbrella in it, and a great novel. For reading suggestions, I love Anne Bogel’s blog, Modern Mrs. Darcy. She always finds the best new books and reminds me of classics that I never read or would read again with a new perspective. The Summer of 2019 is a great year for books. Anne literally read 100s of new books to come up with her list of 25 favorites. There were so many good ones, she couldn’t pare the list down to 25 and recommends 30 instead. Take a look and pick out a few for lazy lake and beach days, and long…
The Preakness is back in Baltimore this week. Bummer that there’s no chance of a Triple Crown winner in 2019, but it’s still an exciting time to see the best of this year’s 3-year-old crop. If you want to get an insider’s view of the action, there is a great FREE way to do it. Sunrise at Hilltop gives racing fans a behind-the-scenes walking tour of Pimlico Race Course – the facility, the track and the contenders. You can watch horses train on the track, meet the horsemen, and greet the sunrise as it rises over Pimlico. Tours are on a first-come, first-serve basis, Tuesday, May 13th – Friday, May 17th. They run every 30 minutes from 6 AM – 9 AM (last tour registration is at 8:45 AM). Use the Rogers Avenue lot at the intersection of Northern parkway and Woodcrest Avenue.
Deloise Noble Strong is best known in the horse world – the Hunter Division of elite horse shows to be exact. She rides and trains inexperienced “green” horses and turns them into contenders. And she finds and matches her clients to the perfect horse to ride and show. For anyone interested in riding or showing horses, her Facebook page and her blog are informative, funny, irreverent, and inspiring.
Quick, easy, fool-proof, crowd-pleasing. My criteria for a recipe these days, especially during the summer when I don’t want to spend much time in the kitchen.
Traveling with a person who has mobility limitations can be quite a challenge. Especially at the beach, a wheelchair, walker, or crutches can greatly limit the enjoyment of going out and sitting on the sand with family and friends. Our family travels with someone who needs to use a walker and who has balance problems on uneven surfaces. Sand is not his friend! We went on a couple vacations where we managed to help him on and off the beach with one of those chairs with the big soft rubber tires, but it was a lot of work. So we were ecstatic to discover that Fenwick Island, Delaware, has a free service that goes far beyond anything offered by the other beaches. Fenwick Island Beach Access Assistance will send a lifeguard in a Bobcat to pick up someone (and their beach gear) and take them to where you are set…
It’s never too late to throw away whatever holds you back, and pursue your passion!
Lola Manekin is the force of nature behind Movement Lab in Baltimore, Maryland. A native of Brazil, she became a US citizen two weeks ago. We asked about the journey that brought her to Baltimore and to her Remington studio where her movement classes are taught to the beat of drums and eclectic world music. Lola’s TedX Hampden Women talk and the answers to our questions give a glimpse into what drives and motivates this amazing woman. If you live in the Baltimore area, we encourage you to go to Movement Lab and meet her.
Baltimore. Bawlamer – because you know, hon, we have that funny accent. Smalltimore – because everyone is connected by just one degree of separation. Whether we’ve been here for generations or came to call this city home in another way, we Bawlamereans love our city. We love our blue crabs and Natty Boh, our O’s and Ravens, our world-renowned Johns Hopkins, the miles of marble steps, the harbor, Hampden’s quirkiness, John Waters, our diverse ethnicity and all the neighborhoods that reflect it. We have a love/hate relationship with The Wire. Everyone laughs at the saying, “The best thing about living in Baltimore is that if I don’t know what I’m doing, someone else always does” because it’s so true. We are a big, small town. Unfortunately, it’s also a city of the haves and the have nots. Safe, affluent neighborhoods, great schools, cultural and social opportunities, and good jobs are…
Nothing says summer more than old woody station wagons, wooden surfboards, or an old wood canoe. But wooden sunglasses? Apparently they are a fashion trend that might be growing in popularity.
Spring is in the air! Time to put away the winter woolens and welcome the season with airy, fresh pieces for your wardrobe. We headed over to the stores at Green Spring Station in Lutherville, Maryland with WDP members Ashley Day & Kristen Cooper to see what great outfits we could find for spring.
